The Search for Purpose- the Recruiting Challenge

Matching people to roles in the recruitment industry is not too much of a challenge.Β Β Finding people driven byΒ Β purposeΒ Β with the right skills and motivationΒ Β toΒ Β stay aΒ Β while, howeverΒ , is whereΒ Β those tasked with recruitingΒ Β requireΒ Β a whole other level of connection, expertise and experience.Β Β Β Especially challenging is when peopleΒ Β are looking to transition from mainstream to a more purpose-orientedΒ Β careerΒ . TheyΒ Β could have the right skillset,Β Β feel passionate about the business and its mission, butΒ Β findΒ Β the transition comesΒ Β with a discount on earningsΒ Β (it usually does)Β , which can be a tough pill to swallowΒ . Oftentimes there is aΒ Β belief that the move to more purpose-driven workΒ Β will bring with it an end toΒ Β thoseΒ Β bad daysΒ Β in the office –  surely everyone will be soΒ Β energiΒ sΒ edΒ Β and motivated by the contribution they ’rΒ eΒ Β Β making to the world everyone will absolutely love coming to work!Β ?!Β Β Β TΒ he reality is, these roles have the same challengesΒ Β Β as corporate roles –  budget pressuresΒ Β (big asks with little money)Β , operational complexitiesΒ Β andΒ Β Β personality clashes,Β Β soΒ Β candidateΒ sΒ Β need to beΒ Β screened thoroughlyΒ Β for everything fromΒ Β experienceΒ Β to motivation to expectationsΒ .Β Β Β

EmployingΒ Β someone who really believes in what they are doingΒ Β and is happy to show up to work every day is invariablΒ y a better situation than someone who drags theΒ iΒ r feet, calls in sick and needs to be constantlyΒ Β monitoredΒ Β in order for them to meetΒ Β deadlines – of this there is no doubt.Β Β Β Β There isΒ , however,Β Β Β alsoΒ Β evidence that fΒ indingΒ Β purpose-orientedΒ Β peopleΒ Β can have aΒ Β significant impact onΒ Β profitΒ ,Β Β Β jobΒ Β satisfactionΒ Β andΒ Β employee tenureΒ .Β Β Recruiting people with a mindset that is aligned to the values of theΒ Β organisationΒ Β Β helpsΒ Β toΒ Β reallyΒ Β embed their purpose into their DNA, so that everyone working there lives itΒ , itΒ Β is evident in every project, every email and every activity the firm participates inΒ Β (rather than it being a dot point on a PowerΒ PointΒ Β presentationΒ Β or aΒ Β feature of a marketing campaignΒ Β coΒ mmunicatedΒ Β once and never spoken of again).Β Β

But how do you find these people?Β Β

Not just aΒ Β network

We knowΒ Β the positive impactΒ Β purposeΒ Β can haveΒ Β Β on an organisationΒ , and howΒ Β aligning purpose-oriented individuals with purpose-oriented businessesΒ Β can spark joy,Β Β improveΒ Β Β business performance andΒ Β enhanceΒ Β job satisfaction.Β Β Plus working with like-minded people can make the whole vibe at work morΒ e enjoyable.Β Β But where are these people hidingΒ ?Β Β Finding candidatesΒ Β Β for whomΒ Β purposeΒ Β brings a sense of fulfilmentΒ Β comes down to having an extensiveΒ , rich and diverseΒ Β network to tapΒ Β into and knowing how toΒ Β continuouslyΒ Β build this networkΒ .Β Β One of the trickiest aspects of the search is the fact thatΒ Β more often than notΒ , these people wΒ on’t beΒ Β actively looking for a new position.Β Β TheΒ Β best people are found fromΒ Β buildΒ ingΒ Β a network of people identifΒ iedΒ Β as purpose-driven throughΒ Β people you know, or throughΒ Β everyday interactions- conversations in the coffee shop,Β Β friends of friends who speak in terms that trigger the recognition ofΒ Β Β like-minded individualΒ sΒ .Β Β In other words, not just CV’s sent via email or a brief conversation over the phone.Β Β Β They may not be looking, they may never be looking, but keeping them on the radar and touching base from time to time opens you up toΒ Β peopleΒ Β theyΒ Β knowΒ Β who mayΒ Β share the same way of thinking andΒ Β in fact be the right person for the role you’re looking to fill.Β Β There is a real purpose-driven community out there, it’s just a matter of knowing where to find them.Β Β Β

Look beyond skillset

Look beyond skills and experience when it comes to a candidate searchΒ .Β Β Β A candidate might be interested who is qualified but doesn’t have the specific experienceΒ Β the hiring manager is after. But if youΒ Β dig a bit deeper you mightΒ Β find out this person has great experience working with smaller budgets,Β Β resilience when faced with knock backs and obstacles, andΒ Β is great at findingΒ Β innovative ways of getting things done. You wouldn’t realise any of these valuable attributesΒ Β by looking at a CVΒ Β or limiting your search to people who fit aΒ Β strict criterionΒ .Β Β HavingΒ Β even the lΒ argeΒ stΒ Β networkΒ Β is not enough- it’s also aboutΒ Β Β knowingΒ Β each person’s story and what they canΒ Β bring to a role beyond technical skillsΒ . That’sΒ Β the secret to unearthing the hidden gems.Β Β Β Β

Purpose-driven people working in roles they are passionate about is likeΒ Β adding accelerator to a small flame. The right chemistry (personality, workstyle and culture) can ignite something very special.Β Β There is no easy way to attractΒ Β theseΒ Β individuals, retain them for longer, all the while meeting your profit and shareholderΒ Β expectationsΒ . It’s like a big jigsaw puzzle with very human parts.Β Β Β You need the network, but not just any network. You need to know the stories of the people in your consideration set (or perhaps you need to re-think your consideration setΒ ) –  toΒ Β discover the things about them that just won ’ t come across in a CV, but will make them an amazing asset to your teamΒ .Β Β Β SΒ omeone who can trulyΒ Β drive your agenda forward,Β Β oftenΒ times even more than the most qualified, experienced individual.Β Β
