The Role

The ESG Manager will continue the firms’ established ESG agenda, both internally and across the 10+ portfolio of companies. Jointly reporting to the Co-Heads of ESG who are both Partners of BGH (the Head of Operations and General Counsel) the role will be responsible for ensuring the implementation of BGH Capital’s ESG framework, as well as onboarding portfolio companies and undertaking materiality assessments to identify risks and opportunities, then partner with portfolio companies in upskilling and building ESG capability.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assisting the Co-Heads of ESG to ensure all policy positions remain current, pragmatic and operationalised, both internally and across the portfolio
  • ESG reporting to relevant stakeholders: investors, financiers, Boards, and others.
  • Conducting ESG due diligence alongside deal teams to integrate ESG considerations across diligence and the deal execution process.
  • Working with portfolio companies to assist understanding of materiality, shape ESG strategies and action plans across onboarding and the ownership period.
  • Undertake and/or support undertaking thematic projects on most material ESG matters, e.g. decarbonisation, carbon baselining, waste reduction, diversity, equity and inclusion, modern slavery management, reconciliation, sustainable procurement etc.
  • Work alongside BGH Capital’s Climate Specialist to measure and manage portfolio companies’ GHG emissions, emissions reduction targets for portfolio companies and decarbonisation pathways.
  • Undertake internal ESG briefings as and where appropriate, ensuring the BGH Capital Partnership and other investment professionals are up to date on best practice and legal requirements across ESG-related topics.
  • Engaging investment stakeholders, including responding to requests for information and ESG questionnaires.
About You

This is an exciting and multifaceted role that will suit someone who is experienced, passionate, and dedicated to improving ESG outcomes, understands the nuances of working in private equity and is motivated to integrate ESG into the investment lifecycle, with a focus on value creation.

You will be a generalist across the ESG spectrum, including specialist knowledge across the social elements which include safety, human rights and modern slavery, reconciliation, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

You will work both internally and externally across the diverse portfolio, as a credible and passionate ESG specialist, able to create true impact.

Required Skills and Proficiencies
  • Academic qualifications in Commerce, Finance, Environmental Science, Law, or other relevant degrees.
  • 8+ years’ proven experience in a relevant field, e.g. sustainability/climate consulting, in-house climate manager, etc.
  • Comfortable working across a diverse range of issues and variety of environments across BGH Capital’s portfolio companies.
  • Able to influence, with excellent stakeholder engagement/management and communication (both written and verbal) skills.
  • Accustomed to managing the competing demands of businesses in regard to sustainability and climate alongside financial pressures.
  • Pragmatic and hands-on approach, with a self-starter mindset.
